For those not familiar with kettlebells, they are basically an iron sphere with a handle, ranging in weight anywhere from 9lbs all the way up to a monstrous 88lbs. They can be used for both strength training as well as for aerobic conditioning, with the capability to condition one in both areas at the same time. For more information, visit the kettlebell FAQ page located elsewhere on this site.
I have to say that I was not sure what to expect… on the one hand I was afraid it would not be of the best quality, considering that “The Russian Kettlebell Challenge” (RKC) was the first Pavel Tsatsouline video released by Dragon Door. I worried that the transfer of the original video to DVD would not come off looking any better than the quality of the original. On the other hand I have never known Dragon Door to put out a product of less than excellent quality.
On to the DVD review.
Content:
RKC is a must see for anyone who is considering purchasing one or more kettlebells. I have never read the print version, but in my opinion there is nothing like actually watching a master like Pavel performing the exercises. Let’s face it, if you don’t know what you’re doing with a kettlebell, you could really hurt yourself. It’s not like your usual piece of home fitness equipment.
The shots are simple, but effective, more often than not giving a full head-to-toe view of Pavel as he performs the kettlebell exercises. The same exercise is shown from more than one angle at times, which is helpful as some of the exercises will seem rather strange the first time you see them done.
Pavel has a very engaging style which makes the DVD easy to watch. He puts on a bit of a “Russian boot camp instructor” persona, but it’s obvious his tongue is firmly planted in his cheek, and you can almost see the grin hovering just out of site. He explains things in a very thorough and easily understood manner. His deep experience comes across completely and you will not mistake him for some of the current fitness gurus hawking their wares on infomercials.
A variety of basic exercises are covered, including cleans, jerks, bent-presses, windmills, military presses, swings, and snatches. There is plenty here to keep you busy for 6 months of training.
Audio:
Nothing spectacular here, but it’s not like you’re expecting surround sound from an instructional video, right? What you do get is audio that is crisp, clean, and clear. There is no popping, hissing, or any sort of “muffled” sound.
Video:
Here is where I was very surprised: The picture quality is excellent. I own the original version on VHS and maybe it’s because I was an early adopter of DVD (since 1999), but to me the video quality on the VHS version seemed quite poor. The content was so good however, that I thought it made up for the lack of video quality.
I don’t know if it was originally shot on digital, or if there was some sort of program used to digitally clean up the original video. Whatever the case, the video on the DVD is very clear and sharp. A vast improvement over the original. I did not notice any artifacts or bleeding of colors.
Menus:
I’ll start out with what bothered me, which wasn’t much, before I get to something I thought was unexpected, but very cool. I’m hoping that this will be taken as feedback for subsequent DVDs.
Recent DVDs give you the ability to skip past the FBI warning and any other “pre-menu” items. The FBI screen doesn’t last long, but the standard disclaimer screen is up for what felt like a very long time. The ability to skip past that would be an excellent addition, and would not affect liability since it *is* present.
Once you get past that, the main menu actually has animation (of a sort) and looks really cool coming together. The images look very professional, but the text on the screen could stand to be of a higher resolution. It looked very “jaggy”, especially on my hi-def big screen. Perhaps on smaller analog screens this is not so noticeable.
There is a chapter menu, as one would expect, and is very helpful to have on an instructional DVD. What you won’t expect is that when you select one of the options (Cleans, Jerks, Presses, etc.), each of those categories takes you to a sub-menu listing each exercise individually! This goes way beyond what I (and others) were hoping for as far as being able to navigate the DVD. Huge kudos to whoever thought that extra step up, and to John DuCane (owner of dragondoor.com) for including it.
Extras:
I didn’t really expect anything in this department, but there is a Pavel Tsatsouline biography similar to the one available at the Dragon Door site.
There is also a menu which leads to clips advertising a number of Pavel’s other videos, including “From Russia with Tough Love”, “Forced Relaxation”, and “Power to the People”. Being a long time fan of Dragon Door’s products, I would have liked have seen some of the more recent products, but I understand the choices shown since they lay the groundwork for a lot of the later products. It’s a great overview for the uninitiated.
Recommendation:
This definitely gets a “thumbs up”. Even if you already own the original, I highly recommend purchasing this. It’s a great DVD, and even if you’re a long-time girevik, watching it again, you may pick up some techniques that you have forgotten. There’s nothing like going back to the basics!

For years, Costa Rica has been one of the most popular vacation destinations in the world. Whether tourists flock here for the adventure opportunities or to learn Spanish, over the years many tourists have decided not to go back home or even to come back and find a place to retire in Costa Rica. So it may not come as a surprise that Costa Rica vacation packages are more popular than ever. But for the travelers that means there are plenty of deals out there to choose from. You might not plan your vacation in Costa Rica around a potential residential area to settle but even so, trying to figure out your best approach to visiting Costa Rica can be a little daunting. Firstly, you need to find a flight. Thankfully, there are plenty of discount flights into Costa Rica available but you still need to spend some time figuring out the best departure date. Then, of course, you need a place to stay. Again, more time lost doing research and finding what suits you best. And you’ll also need some ideas about what to do with your time. A travel guide could come in handy now, at least to check out the highlights and plan accordingly. But by booking a vacation package you can save money and time since you’ll get both the flight and hotel in the same package. Of course, some packages might be flights-only or hotel-only deals, but in many cases they are combined and generally offer great value for the money.

This article discusses eliminating incompletions or energy drains.
One key element to building a strong personal foundation and a great life is the concept of eliminating “incompletions.” What I mean by that is to finish your unfinished business. We all have projects, relationships, and situations which are unfinished and continue to consume our personal energy. Our energy is drained even when we are not thinking of the incompletion consciously. This could be as simple as the dent in my car fender that I’ve been meaning to fix. It could also be the craft project(s) in my closet I never finished, or the college degree I stopped short of getting.
This one simple concept has been life changing for me personally. I went back to college after twenty two years and completed my Bachelor of Science in Management in 2001. I’d always wanted to do it, and wondered if I could handle it… afford it… fit it into my life, and finally, I got the courage to finish this huge incompletion. It was my proudest moment.
A clue that something might be an incompletion for you is having a feeling such as guilt, remorse, regret, shame, anger, denial or sadness. Look inside to see if any of these ring a bell. You are the only judge.
Why do we allow ourselves to get incomplete? Sometimes we have a need that is not being met. It may just be that we don’t have an awareness of the dynamic of having these incompletions. Occasionally, a person may become addicted or attached to something, a substance or behavior (a therapist may be required here).
Incompletions show up in four areas in our lives: physically, in relationships, in our surroundings, and in our financial affairs. A good way to identify incompletions in your life is to take the Clean Sweep Program, a component of the Personal Foundations Program. Also, going forward, do complete work. Think about this in everything you say, touch or do.
Once you start to eliminate these incompletions, you’ll see an immediate burst of energy. The person who does complete work has more confidence, more time, fewer problems, and more opportunities. I challenge you to start making a list of the incompletions in your life, and knock one or two off the list right away. Let me know how it feels….

Minerals play an important role in our body, and the basic fact is that we do not get enough of it from food alone. The nutritional content of food is not the same today as it was 10-20 years agoit has become much less due to inappropriate farming methods, soil erosion, etc. Additionally, it has been said that our bodies can only absorb 5% of the minerals found in food.
Because of these factors, our bodies have become deficient in mineralsone of the symptoms being constant hunger. But before we go into that, let’s take a brief look first at some basic facts about minerals.
Essential Minerals
Basically, there are 16 minerals that are recognized as essential to our health. The body requires minerals in small amounts, and they can be toxic when taken in excess.
“The Committee on Dietary Allowances of the National Academy of Sciences has established a Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) for the major minerals calcium, phosphorus, and magnesium, and for the best-known trace minerals iron, zinc, iodine, and selenium. Estimated Minimum Requirements have been established for sodium, potassium, and chloride.1″ Aside from this, there is an Estimated Safe and Adequate Daily Dietary Intake (ESADDI) for other essential minerals like fluoride, chromium, copper, manganese, and molybdenum.
As of the moment, minerals such as arsenic, nickel, silicon, and boron are established as essential to animals, but there aren’t enough studies which prove that it is essential to humans. In addition, there also aren’t enough clinical data which demonstrate that cadmium, cobalt, lead, lithium, tin, and vanadium are needed by the body.
So what do we do about the lack of minerals in our body? This is where the 75 Colloidal Minerals come in.
75 Colloidal Minerals: The History
It all started in the year 1925, when an ailing Utah cattle rancher named Thomas Jefferson Clark was told by Chief Soaring Eagle, a Paiute medicine man and elder about a spring that has healing powers. This legendary spring was said to be used by local natives who have known about its healing abilities for years.
Soon after Clark drank from this magic spring, he was miraculously cured of his ailment. So he followed the spring into the mountains to find at its source a deposit of minerals: organic-rich shales.
In the year 1931, Clark then created his own tonic abundant in colloidal minerals by extracting these minerals from the spring. People who tried his miraculous tonic experienced amazing results. Because of this, the legend of the 75 Colloidal Minerals was born.
Colloidal Minerals
Colloidal Minerals are “extra-small mineral particles suspended in a solution, and they are being promoted as a cure for acne, anemia, brittle nails, birth defects, cancer, constipation, depression, diabetes, goiter, graying hair, hair loss, hyperactivity, impotence, infertility, memory loss, PMS, and wrinkles.2″
The 75 colloidal mineral supplements supposedly have a negative charge that increases the body’s absorption of the minerals. In addition, toxins are said to be attracted to this negative charge, after which it is flushed out of the body.
The 75 minerals that are contained in the colloidal mineral supplements include the following: Ag, Al, As, Au, B, Ba, Be, Bi, Br, C, Ca, Cd, Ce, Cl, Co, Cr, Cs, Dy, Er, Eu, F, Fe, Ga, Gd, Ge, H, Hf, Hg, Ho, I, In, Ir, K, La, Li, Lu, Mg, Mn, Mo, N, Na, Nb, Nd, Ni, O, Os, P, Pb, Pd, Pr, Pt, Re, Rh, Ru, S, Sb, Sc, Se, Si, Sm, Sn, Sr, Ta, Tb, Te, Th, Ti, Tl, Tm, V, W, Y, Yb, Zn, and Zr.

Once you’ve finally visited your health care provider and you have been diagnosed with panic attacks stemming from a panic disorder, you will be provided with a suggested course of treatment. In order to make sure the treatment has the best chance of succeeding, here are some tips to keep in mind.
Participate in Your Treatment
Do not sit back and wait for relief to come by itself! You must remain very active and aware of your mind and body’s reactions to your treatment. Be ready and willing to ask any and every question and to address every concern you have with your health care provider. Open lines of communication will go a long ways towards increase your treatment’s chance of success.
Be Patient
While many patients respond within weeks or sometimes even days to treatments for panic attacks, no one responds the same. Furthermore, no known treatments for panic work instantly. Be prepared to spend at least a full two months following your initial course of treatment before you start judging its effectiveness. If you still haven’t experienced the improvement you were seeking, you can always work with your provider to adjust your treatment plan then.
Be Alert To Side Effects
If part of your treatment involves medication, you will likely start with a small dosage and work your way up to the level your doctor is recommending. Of course, be sure you know exactly what your dosage is and how often you are to take it. Make certain your doctor explains to you any side effects you might expect. Usually they diminish with time as your tolerance increases, but make sure to let your doctor know if you are uncomfortable. Your doctor may begin lowering your dosage, have you stop taking the medication or suggest trying an alternative.
Join A Panic Disorder Support Group
These can be a great source of support, relief and information for those who suffer from panic attacks. Usually a group of a dozen or fewer patients will gather weekly to talk about their experiences, their treatments and coping tips.
Just keeping these tips in mind and putting them to use during your treatment may help make you feel much better and increase your chances of treatment being effective.

The California asphalt paving industry is ever-changing and in order to provide the best services, asphalt paving companies are turning to new technologies to stay ahead of the competition.
Asphalt technology in California has been changing since the creation of Hot Mix Asphalt and will continue to change as time permits. Asphalt rubber pavement was introduced in 1991, which shocked many industry experts. Asphalt rubber pavement seemed promising to those in the industry who were ready for a change. On the other end of the spectrum were industry experts who thought that the world wasn’t ready for such technologies to be implemented.
In Tom Kuennens article titled, “Asphalt Rubber Makes a Quiet Comeback” shown in Better Roads Magazine, he describes rubber asphalt as, “a chemically reacted mix of liquid asphalt binder with 15 to 22% crumb rubber. The rubber is obtained from reclaimed tires, and added to liquid asphalt. It’s reacted at elevated temperatures prior to being mixed with aggregate.”
There are two types of asphalt rubber (wet process) are used in California. Type A- contains rubber only from ground tires, and Type B contains rubber from both ground tires and natural rubber. Caltrans seems to favor Type B binders because they have better resistance to reflection cracking and provide better stability. Rubber pavement disappeared for a few years due an increase in asphalt pavement technologies and a decrease in existing pavement costs associated with this form of material. Until recently, a number of important developments have helped propel asphalt rubber pavement to its current level of acceptance, including new tire-shredding technologies and the establishment of tire recycling facilities in every part of the United States.
In late 1994 the city of Los Angeles had the chance to repaved Olympic Boulevard with hot-mix asphalt which included 15% asphalt rubber millings from that same street.
How often will California use this material to law a quieter foundation for its streets?
Nobody knows. By decreasing noise on the highways, this asphalt technology gains ground with the transportation department of California. At the same time it also loses
popularity because of the negative byproducts it elicits, i.e., bad smell, smoke, and sticky material base.
Tom Kuennens also stated that, “The California’s Rubberized Asphalt Concrete Technology Center promotes the use of crumb rubber from scrap tires in roadway rehab projects by providing education, and consultation services to local agencies within California.”

How did you choose your job? Are you satisfied with your career choice? “It is my mission to help people find the career they can call their own.” Stated Career Coach Kathy Thompson.
After years of working in the wrong jobs, Thompson now helps people find themselves and the career they were “born” to. “It’s so frustrating going from job to job and finding something missing. It was never right. It was never satisfying or fulfilling.”
To save others from going through the same thing, Thompson developed the “Career4U Profile”.
The “Career4U Profile” is a three part system; The Survey, Your Assets, and Mirror, Mirror on the Wall. What makes it so unique is Thompson’s use of physiognomy(face reading) to determine the personality and the career that matches it.
Physiognomy is a science dating back to Hippocrates and the Han Dynasty. Face Reading reveals a person’s personality, past, destiny. Certain personality traits are best suited for specific careers. Entrepreneurs should be risk takers, ambitious, confident, innovative, analytical. Teachers should be tolerant, tactful, optimistic, confident. Sales people should be friendly, physical, tactful, domineering, objective. Managers need to be Self-Confident,analytical, possessive, domineering, impersonal. Each trait is seen in the face.

If exercises are regularly performed well within the current capabilities of the muscles involved, no muscle gains will be produced. When you engage in an exercise program that forces your body to draw on its reserve ability, your body is forced to increase its current levels of strength and muscle mass in order to keep up. Unless these demands are maintained and or increased, the body will not be capable of dealing with future demands. All future demands must be greater than the previous. This is achieved with the addition weight and or more repetitions.
The ability for you to increase the quantity of exercise, via additional exercises and sets, is not really progress. A muscle is capable of performing almost any amount of low intensity exercise. True progression is stimulated by greater demands in power. Increasing the level of intensity through the addition of weight is the secret key to help you build muscle fast.
In practice, an effectively performed set of barbell curls would have a physical repetition limit of ten. Once a you can perform ten full repetitions with ease, the number of repetitions should not be increased. But, the amount of weight used should. With increased weight, you may only be capable of performing eight repetitions. You should then work towards increasing the number of repetitions performed to ten.
When I first learned this secret, I focused on this one factor almost entirely. Doing this had a direct impact on all of the other factors involved. Training the largest muscle groups of the body at an elevated pace, until momentary exhaustion, literally forces you to workout briefly. Fifteen to twenty minutes maximum.
