Snowboarding Breaks for the Carbon Conscious Tourist

Hundreds of avid snowboarders will shortly be searching for their ski trousers and dashing off hunting for the greatest snow. And beyond any doubt the result of our carbon footprint will be close to as far down the list of vacation essentials as a Christmas cracker after the Christmas holidays. Merely last year, a sluggish snow hit the broadsheets and tourists were panic stricken about the smattering of snow dissolving nearly as soon as they settled.

Holiday business Chalet 1802, based at the bottom of Mount Blanc in Chamonix village in the Alps, is one of the only independent businesses to go carbon negative and offer skiers an environmentally friendly selection whilst reserving their skiing holidays. Chalet 1802 proprietor Saturnina stated: Last year was quite a surprise with the hottest wintertime in fifty years in France. French skiing areas such as Val Thorens, La Grave and Courchevel lacked clients. It was temperate and the snowfall didnt settle so much of the early snowboarding season in the French Alps was uneven. We chose to go carbon negative to help preserve the skiing resort.

Saturnina said: We’re not attempting to dictate to punters only I think its valuable to give the guests the selection without increasing the cost of the trip. If the client book with us and visits our skiing chalet they may more than off set their carbon footprint and we soak up the additional prices. Naturally we still have a sauna and a hot tub – people want luxuriousness but not at the expense of the alps mountains, so we considered means of diminishing the affect of a skier flying over here for a skiing holiday.”

Chalet 1802 have also joined with charity Climate Care, who tackles global warming by providing C02 reductions on behalf of people and businesses.
